The Multi-faceted, Multi-dimensional Christian Life
Over the past few weeks, my eyes have been opened as never before to the all-encompassing, wholly-pervading life of the Christian. The path which the believer walks contains more lessons to be learned than can be imagined and more realms in which to apply these lessons than can be dreamed. A growing, godly believer actively participates in a host of responsibilities, actions, endeavors, and opportunities that lie before him.
A perusal of a handful of spiritual disciplines gives us greater insight into the multi-faceted, multi-dimensional Christian life. The Word commands all Christians to watch incessantly over their carnal flesh, to exhort and encourage other believers daily, to pray ceaselessly, to love relentlessly, and to walk in deeply-profound biblical wisdom. To honestly undertake one of these particular tasks to its proper extent, a great amount of attention is required. Yet, the disciple is called to engage in a vast multitude of lessons. Is there enough energy and time?
Could believer's life be apathetic when we can scarcelessly find the proper time to develop these disciplines? If it appears to be so, one does not understand the permeating nature of the disciple's journey. Not only are there many commands to follow, but there remain a myriad of levels on which they must be performed. I am charged to love my wife more than I love myself, to affectionately care for the unbelieving soul, and to seek the good in the one who appears deprived of all goodness. I am implored to pray while I am stuck in traffic, while I study at home, and while I speak to my enemy. The issue of the apathetic Christian life does not lie in its inherent dullness, rather in the disregard to connect all of our duties to all of our lives.
How our hearts and minds ought to be saturated with various lessons of godliness! At first glance, it may appear burdensome and difficult. Yet, because the believer understands that his duties do not gain him access to God but continual conformity to His image, the true disciple of Christ undertakes each task with abiding delight and lasting joy.
