When God says, "I'm in control."
This past Sunday, on the way home from church, I turned to my wife and stated to her how dissappointed I was that I have not been able to continue the relationships that I had started earlier in the summer with several Mexican men in our neighborhood. They don't play soccer in the evenings anymore and seem to have moved out of the area. Since we have been back from Uruguay I had not seen any of them. In my heart, I wondered why God would allow such a great building of relationships at the beginning of the summer, opportunities for the gospel, only to have these opportunities fall flat.
That afternoon, my wife went to do a few errands. As I sat on my couch reading a portion of Leviticus, someone knocked on the door. As I opened it I was amazed to see my friend Alberto, who had previously eaten in our home and with whom I was able to share the gospel, along with another man, Omar. Omar is a Honduran, who has lived in the United States for 2 years.
They stayed for four hours. We talked about everything under the sun, including a few things about the gospel and how Christ is supreme in all of life.
If that were not enough, as my wife went on her daily run last evening, she noticed that several new latin guys were playing at a nearby apartment complex. I threw on some clothes and ran over there to play. As I went, I prayed that God would use this game of soccer to exalt the name of Christ and to expand His kingdom in this world.
We played until we could not see the ball at our feet. There were no opportunities to share the gospel. But then again, I was not expecting for there to be any. My prayer is that God can use this game, once again, for His glory and for their salvation. I pray that as I continue to befriend and play with these guys, that the Lord will open the opportunities for His name to be exalted.
As I look back, I realize that it is only my lack of knowledge which causes me to doubt God's plan. God's wisdom and sovereignty supercedes any justification I could ever make of any situation. God alone is wise. God alone is in control.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11
